В основу поэмы легли реальные факты биографии героически сражавшихся под Ленинградом братьев-добровольцев - Ивана, Василия, Семена, Луки, Аксентия и Александра Шумовых, с которыми Прокофьев встречался 23-25 мая 1943 г.

О миномётном расчёте братьев Шумовых было опубликовано много очерков и статей в центральной периодике (в «Правде», «Красной звезде», «Огоньке» и др.), а также в газетах Волховского и Ленинградского фронтов; в 1943 г. Политуправление Волховского фронта выпустило брошюру С. Кары «Миномётчики братья Шумовы», в журнале «Огонёк» (1944, № 1) была помещена большая фотография братьев-добровольцев.

Сколько звёзд голубых, сколько синих,
Сколько ливней прошло, сколько гроз.
Соловьиное горло - Россия,
Белоногие пущи берёз.

Да широкая русская песня,
Вдруг с каких-то дорожек и троп
Сразу брызнувшая в поднебесье
По-родному, по-русски - взахлеб;

Да какой-нибудь старый шалашик,
Да задумчивой ивы печаль,
Да родимые матери наши,
С-под ладони глядевшие вдаль;

Да простор вековечный, огромный,
Да гармоник размах шире плеч,
Да вагранки, да краны, да домны,
Да певучая русская речь!

Каждый день был по-своему громок,
Нам войти в эти дни довелось.
Сколько ливенок, дудочек, хромок
Над твоими лугами лилось!

Ты вовек не замолкнешь, родная,
Не померкнут веснянки твои,
Коль сейчас по переднему краю
Неумолчно свистят соловьи!

Всё равно на тропинках знакомых
И сейчас, у любого крыльца,
Бело-белая пена черёмух
Льётся, льётся - и нет ей конца!

The poem is based on the real facts of the biography of volunteer brothers who heroically fought near Leningrad - Ivan, Vasily, Semyon, Luka, Aksenty and Alexander Shumov, with whom Prokofiev met on May 23-25, 1943.

Many essays and articles about the mortar squad of the Shumov brothers were published in the central periodicals (in Pravda, Krasnaya Zvezda, Ogonyok, etc.), as well as in the newspapers of the Volkhov and Leningrad fronts; in 1943, the Political Administration of the Volkhov Front published S. Kara's pamphlet «The Shumov Brothers Mortars», in the magazine «Ogonyok» (1944, No. 1) featured a large photograph of the volunteer brothers.

How many stars: light blue and blue shine here,
How many rains, thunderstorms have gone.
You are the nightingale's throat - Russia dear,
Groves of birches with legs: white and long!

And else Russian song: broad and expansive,
Suddenly raised from roads and paths, but
Splashed right into the heaven, so pensive
And dear - with Russian spirit and heart;

And some old small tent of boughs quivering,
And the thoughtful willows' sadness some,
And every of our dear mothers, peering
Into distance from under the palm;

And expanse: huge, eternal, life gifting,
Bayans' range - wider much than they reach,
Also, fuel and blast furnaces, cranes lifting,
Alive melodious Russian speech!

Each day occurred to be its own way loud,
We chanced to enter these days and meet,
How much sound from pipes' and harmonics' cloud
Was pouring over Your meadows sweet!

You will never be silent, Russia dear,
Your primroses, daisies will never fade,
As now still, along the front line, we hear,
How nightingales sing in the trees' shade!

After all, on the paths and roads, well-known,
Now, at each porch the bird cherries pour:
Their snowy white-white foam, they have grown -
With no end, and that'll be evermore!
