The devil’s in the detail.
Come together.

First, I tried to explain the actual authorship of the piece only to discover that someone already did it in much greater detail I ever could. So I had to come back and delete part of the message.
Then, I felt an urge to finish my version I’ve been planning to record for 20 years but never got around to it. Now I feel a little ashamed. It’s the second time I read your work and then go and finish mine. Feels like I’m cheating or something to that extent. Hope you don’t hold it against me. In my pathetic case, this kind of things requires some external push and you happen to provide it, unbeknownst to you, of course.
Yep, you’re right! (A single manly tear appears in the corner of his also masculine eye…)))))

I like it. Although like any translation it is somewhat lacking the emotional aspect of the original. It is not easy, I know, I have failed in y attempt to get everything right.
Below is the rough translation I did for the CD 5 years ago and hope it may give you additional material in case you wish to continue your work on the poem.
///////////////////////////
I've returned to my city known to me through my tears,
to each little vein, the swollen glands of my childhood.
So you've back now. Then swallow in a hurry
The fish-oil of Leningrad's river lamps.
Go ahead, recognize this December day,
Where the yellow egg-yolk is stirred into the menacing tar.
Petersburg! I don't want to die yet!
You have got the numbers of my telephones.
Petersburg! I've still got the addresses
Where I can locate the voices of the dead.
I dwell on the back stairs, and my temple
is pierced by the doorbell torn out with its flesh
And I wait all night long for the dear guests to come
Touching quietly the shackles of the rattling chains on the door .
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Also let me submit - hope it is not too presumptuous - a direct link to my version of the song, which I did only because Alla Pugacheva butchered it, IMHO.

Keep up your good work.

Thank you very much for your review and for sharing your own version with me.
Emotions in any language are usually delivered through connotation; i.e., associative-emotional shades of meaning. For non-native speaker connotations are more elusive. This is particularly evident in the way non-native speakers use or react to pejoratives. To create an emotionally-charged piece one should select lexemes with richer connotative properties. For instance, "swallow" is a rather neutral lexeme, whereas "devour and cram" points to a hasty and greedy manner of swallowing/consuming. Another way to create moods is to select more idiomatic expressions and avoid word-for-word translations, like in “dear guests”, in which the ironic undertone of “dear” is lost. In fact, the protagonist does not expect anybody “dear”, but rather he is beware of the secret service agents, who had a habit of showing up in the middle of the night uninvited. “House guests” would be more appropriate here, since in this combination “guest” has also the meaning of “visitor”; i.e., somebody who is not invited.
In poetry, especially the Silver Age poetry, the poetic meter creates a unique emotional atmosphere that is also reinforced through selection of distinctive phonemic emotional undertones, such as melodic poignancy, cold elegance or rustic simplicity, to name a few. Mandelstam poetry is one of the most melodic, and my major objective was to create a layer of emotive ambiance through the strict adherence to the original meter. When this is not maintained, like in your version, the waltz-like anapestic tetrameter is lost to the reader.
Again, thank you very much for your thoughts and for your reviews. I will respond to the other one, when I have access to the Russian keyboard.
Regards,
Dina

I respectfully... disagree. Not with your premise, mind you, but its generic application to this particular poem. This poem is about fear and paranoia superimposed against the distant childhood memories. No one can argue with that. Therefore, you are absolutely right, the choice of words is important, as it seemed important to its anxious author.
In your example, neither “devour” nor “cram” reflect - my guess – the intention of Mandelshtam, where he refers to the practice of giving fish-oil to kids. (Boy, did I also have to gulp it down in my time! Gulp - that’s the word!) “Devour” is too big a word for the occasion, “cram” is too violent implying forceful stuffing. House guest is generally someone who is already in the house and is entertained or served upon. They are the ones the hosts can’t wait to leave.
As for my translation, it is not the poetic one, not at all. Just a general idea for the English-speaking listeners to my song, I wished to share with you.
Actually, my song retains the tri-count of the poetry. It just does not follow the logic that the meaning and sensibility of the poem is secondary to its supposed rhythm. Waltz is not the only musical style that has three beats per bar. I went to fear and paranoia and voices of the dead, and the premonition of the end, as I read in “Leningrad.” Well, I could be wrong.
Not to brag, but I’ve lived in Canada for 20 years and as a script/play writer have to know a little about language. I’m just sharing what I think I can contribute to Mandelshtam’s legacy, and only hope it helps. At least we’re having a lively discussion, aren’t we?
You inspired me to do another, this time poetic translation of “Leningrad”, for that I thank you.

I realized that instead of criticizing other people, I should put my money where my mouth is and submit myself to harsh criticism.
And so I did and mentioned your translation of “Leningrad” as a source of my inspiration. Hope you do not mind.

Now we are talking! Well, I should say that's an improvement from the Babel-Fish output. Here it is. Enjoy!
I returned to my city, familiar to the tears,
to the veins, to the children's swollen glands.
You returned here, whereas so swallow sooner
the fish oil of Leningrad river lamps.
However, learn faster the December day,
where yolk is mixed to the ominous tar.
Petersburg, I yet do not want to die:
In you the telephones of my of number.
Petersburg, in me still is addresses,
From which I will find the corpses of voice.
I on the stairs of black live, and into the temple
Strikes to me the bell pulled out with the meat.
And entire night I right through wait the guests of expensive, [Shevelya] by the shackles of the chains of door.
Isn't it great? I love technology!
I still can't believe you thought I could benefit from it.
