Yury Levitansky «Here, an ancient custom...»
Here the ancient custom
will be observed.
Knock on a wooden shutter, and what—
you'll have brewed tea,
dried felt boots; you'll be served
from the stove, the cabbage soup so hot.
In these log huts,
where in breadths, snow rages,
breathing with the frosts, bitter and white,
Siberia soul has dwelt
for ages.
ever-hospitable, lavish, bright.
Perhaps, there's someone else, who
here does dwell,
on hearing at the gate steps or call,
will close his door with a latch, from the well
won't give a scoop of water at all—
he's irresistibly drawn by the best
meeting with every five-kopeck coin—
let that scrooge tremble o'er his iron chest,
against anyone who can purloin!
How often
in stove huts, they did invite
me to their modest tables before—
to put me mere
in their beds for the night,
while they themselves slept just on the floor.
Seeing me off to the gate at morn there,
they said to me,
after smoking one,
like, what we are rich with,
we’re glad to share.
Forgive if anything wrong we've done!..
Opening the door into my home free,
hiding not thoughts and feelings
of mine,
I learn to be
worthy, to some degree,
of this generosity
divine.
To share all,
that in my soul I'm keeping,
in a sympathetic care, the best—
with a person,
lost in the woods' thicket,
a roamer,
seeking shelter and rest.
So that, while parting by the fence in air,
in a friendly way, when smoking one,
to say:
— What we’re rich with, glad to share.
Forgive if anything wrong, we've done!
