Levitansky in English

Yuri Levitansky «There's in music a sorrow so unearthly…»
There's in music a sorrow so unearthly,
as if it weren't born in this world, so then—
not the violin and piano can
draw this sorrow out to voice it exaustly.
And even the harp's each mellifluous string,
and even the organ's trembling trumpets are,
for that sorrow—rude, sounding not up to par,
for that immense unearthly grief to sing.
And they've met, uniting into a great,
strong and cohesive orchestral fellowship,
the all-powerful maestro's baton does sweep
upward, like the very finger of fate.
There, there—to where the starry worlds shed lights,
beyond all count, beyond all bounds exceeding,
Oh, this conductor—rules well the wand's beating—
And he will take them up to such great heights!
There, there—higher and faster, he's taking
them up—to where the starry fugue's rampaging…
A blizzard's blowing. And a blizzard's raging.
They're already shaking. How they're shaking!
Like out cold, a storm's nine-point wave does start
to spin and toss them, the maestro knows his stuff—
and only a single drop is not enough
for the heart to finally break apart.
Something at the bottom remains birthly,
splashing in the vessel, by mystery blessed,
the very essence's residue, the rest—
of its sorrow, boundless and unearthly.
Then, the owner and guard of that last sup,
from the sky-high heights to place it to our hands—
the extraterrestrial—Mozart descends,
and with a smile, he passes us a cup:
and to the last sup, you may drink this treat—
that sorrow, which in bitterness has no lack—
so that, feeling the cold behind your own back,
you might suddenly wonder how it's sweet!
