Nikolay Tikhonov «Cat-fisher's Lane»

There, one wall almost reached another wall,
Each had neither door nor window at all.

Between, so shallow, one could see the bed—
A stream flew—a mere name, nothing instead.

Once, it was full of water’s work and play,
A wise cat sat on the stream every day.

Seeking a meal for his host’s tasty whim,
The cat put his paw deep into the stream,

He scrutinized his catch before to store,
Having speared the fish on his sharp gray claw,

If the fish was the defective one, then—
The drudge-cat got into the stream again.

The people of those yards said about him,
“Here's the cat named—a fisher on the stream”.

The entire lane was given to the cat,
As a master of fair fishing, they said.

Away from the halls and spite so horrid,
Paris told me this heartwarming story.

Now the stream's such that you can see the bed—
Houses above—mere names, nothing instead.

I get no maudlin about this at all,
No pity for the stream or for the wall.

Let the one that served a man well, like that—
Enter the song as a hero: this cat.

And from the lane, narrow as a doorway,
I look now at my native land alway.

To all of you, dogs—who guard borders' lots,
To you, horses, who are faster than birds,

To you, tundra's deer, swallowers of snow,
Camels of Trans-Caspian shores that glow—

I don't laugh, it's not in vain that I say,
Thank you from my heart, saying all the way:

For hard work's days, modesty, simple will,
For doing all with fair, diligent skill.

I want you, the animals of my land,
People would guard you for your help at hand

And honor you for your every best deed,
To which your valor has led to indeed,

As this world city honors to these days
The fair, diligent drudge with the cat's face!
