Yesenin in English

Sergei Yesenin «Golden leaves started their gentle skimming...»

Golden leaves started their gentle skimming
In the pond's water with pinkish light,
Like butterflies' airy swarm flies gleaming—
Breathlessly to a star in the height.

I'm in love with this evening, I swear,
Dear to heart—this vale, yellowing earth,
The wind, a naughty young lad, has stripped bare
The birch's hem up to shoulders of hers.

It's cool in my soul and in the vale's air,
Blue twilight is like a flock of sheep,
Behind the hushed garden's wicket gate there,
A small bell tinkles—then falls to sleep.

I have never listened with care so wise
To the rational flesh, down the bottom,
Like a willow with boughs, it would be nice—
To fall in pinkishness of water.

It would be nice—smiling at the hay-mound,
To chew hay with the moon’s muzzle small…
Where are you, where my calm joy to be found—
To love all, and want nothing at all?
