English

Boris Slutsky «History spilled on us…»
History spilled on us with its shower,
I got a sousing beneath its roaring sky.
And I bore its swing so vast and spring so high,
I bore all, and felt its solemn power.
Epoch burst out o'er me, like a downpour—
upon a valley steeped in silence at all,
at times with a just and extended war,
at times with a brief injustice did it fall.
Did our generation wish it or not—
our epoch reckoned, reared, raced and racked then
a mass of our souls, flesh a lot,
yes, our souls, and not just inert, straw-stuffed men.
Into what cloth our thread was once woven,
our note rang in what loud thunders on the earth?
it is clear now; the answer is well known:
the fate—its sudden urges and longueurs.
The forms' columns, we filled in haste, does keep
the mark, this is our own fate's eternal brand.
Fate, like an oak, has dug its long roots deep—
into every beginning, middle, and end.
