Я отзывчив на одобрения,
как отзывчивы на удобрения
полосы нечернозёмной
неприкаянные поля:
возвращает сторицей зёрна
та, удобренная, земля.

А на ругань я не отзывчив,
только молча жую усы,
и со мной совершенно согласны
пашни этой же полосы.

Нет, не криком, не оскорблением —
громыхай хоть, как майский гром,
дело делают одобрением,
одобрением и добром.

I'm responsive to praises and prizes,
as are responsive to fertilizers -
the forsaken fields, in the north,
of non-chernozem belt with less rains,
where their nicely fertilized earth
bestows back a hundredfold more grains.

I'm unresponsive to any scold,
I chew my mustache, I’m like jelled,
they agree with me, with all their salt, —
these tilled soils of the same earth's belt.

You may rumble like a May thunder storm —
but shouts and insults should not stand,
the deed is doing with the consent, so warm,
With the consent and kind intent.
