Я внутри вмещая
Время и Разлад —
Огни вулкана глубоко подо льдами —
Чувствую как чёрный рак в глубинах
Моего вялого гнева сквозь сон
И одурь скользит в глотку и пальцы
Чтобы полыхнуть катастрофой.
Солнце дробит блестящие крылья
В плену зеркального павильона;
В заголовках газет царит кошмар;
А лето бросив свежую сень лесов
Мгновенно вспыхивает на пике буйства
Но однополчане вразвалку бродят в деревьях
В грошовом шлягере все их чувства.

Я ж как на ходу застигнут
Поцелуем
Замер на взморье
У меловой
Ямы любуясь
На вьюрков их
Единую красоту
И геральдику
Силу крылышек
Их трепет и живость
На ветках песни.

Говорят они
Живут долго ссорятся умирают;
Говорят их краткое совокупление
На шаткой веточке
Попирает мистерию
Вечного союза
Девочки с мальчиком.
               
                И всё ж
Терзаясь мыслями войной
И любовью
Я нахожу покой
Следя за
Игрой и м'ельком вьюрков
Таких же чарующих
Таких же безразличных ко мне
Как Англия в это утро Весны.

The Soldier

I

I within me holding
Turbulence and Time—
Volcanic fires deep beneath the glacier—
Feel the dark cancer in my vitals
Of impotent impatience grope its way
Through daze and dream to throat and fingers
To find its climax of disaster.
The sunlight breaks its glittering wings
Imprisoned in the Hall of Mirrors:
Nightmare rides upon the headlines;
While Summer leaves her green reflective woods
And flashes momently on peaks of madness
But leisurely my fellow soldiers stroll among the trees
The cheapest dance song utters all they While.

Now as a lover would
Kiss while walking
In the beach copse
By the chalk-pit
I stand and marvel
At the finches
Identical beauty
Heraldic markings
Power of wings
To flicker and blossom
On branches of song.

Say that they last
And squabble and die;
Say their glancing copulation,
Poised flutter on a twig,
Ignores the holy mystery
Of boy and girl together
Timelessly

                Yet still
I who am agonized by thought
And war and love
Grow calm again
With watching
The flash and play of finches
Who are as beautiful
And as indifferent to me
As England is, this Spring morning.
