Ukrainian oligarchs ordered to repay $1.9bn over bank fraud
July 30, 2025 — England’s High Court has ordered former Ukrainian oligarchs Ihor Kolomoisky and Gennadiy Bogolyubov to repay $1.9 billion over fraudulent lending that led to the collapse of PrivatBank, Ukraine’s largest bank, which they co-owned before its 2016 nationalization. The judge, Mr Justice Trower, found them jointly and severally liable for the losses. This decision concludes an eight-year legal battle by PrivatBank and marks a significant victory for the Ukrainian government amid ongoing scrutiny of its anti-corruption efforts. PrivatBank accused the oligarchs of orchestrating a scheme from 2013–2014 in which loans were funneled through sham companies under their control for fake commodity trades, effectively laundering money and avoiding capital controls. Despite denying involvement, Kolomoisky and Bogolyubov did not appear in court. Their assets were initially frozen in 2017. Kolomoisky, once an ally of President Zelenskyy, has since faced legal action in Ukraine and the U.S. for fraud, money laundering, and other crimes. His relationship with Zelenskyy has deteriorated, with the president enacting reforms to block former bank owners from reclaiming assets. The court ruling reinforces Ukraine’s commitment to financial transparency under international pressure from lenders like the IMF.
