Земля, постель солдатская,
Пока не ходит гром,
Мы на тебя, на братскую,
Приляжем впятером.

Вздремнём, заснём, и наш покой
На всю войну такой:
Две-три гранаты под рукой,
Две-три - на час лихой.

Вздремнём на миг по-местному
Опять за старым пнём,
По-нашему, известному,
Солдатскому вздремнём.

Наш сон, как дрёма, входит в быт.
Всё ж сон ни то ни сё.
Дремли, чтоб левый был закрыт,
А правый видел всё!

(А можно и наоборот.
Как говорит народ:
Коль ты на правом спишь боку,
То левый начеку.)

Солдаты дымом греются,
Солдаты шилом бреются
И варят щи из колуна.
Вздремнём,
на кой нам чёрт луна,
На кой нам чёрт луна!

Она, как этот пень, крива,
Она себя томит…
Ночной извозчик наш У-2*
Рессорою гремит.

Товарищ милый, добрый путь!
Товарищ, добрый путь!
Куда летишь, туда прибудь,
Откуда взмыл, прибудь.

И, может, ленинградскому,
Ему нужна луна?..
Земля - постель солдатская -
Сегодня холодна.

The ground is the soldier's bed,
Until the thunder booms,
The five of us lie, with leaves clad,
On brothers' one, in blooms.

We take a nap, and a bit sleep,
Whole war, sleep isn’t deep:
Two, three grenades at hand, we grip,
Same for hard time, we keep.

We take a nap, the local way,
By the old stump again,
The well-known way, on the earth gray,
We take a nap, war men.

Sleep fills our life as nap at hand.
Nor fish, nor meat, we call.
Nap so that your left eye's shut, and -
Your right eye observes all!

(It could be backward of all those.
As the folk saying goes:
If you're sleeping on your right side,
Left side's on guard, all right.)

Soldiers warm with smoke, like shawl,
Soldiers shave with a plain awl,
And cook Russian shchi* from coloon**.
Let's nap,
                what the hell we need moon,
What the hell we need moon!

The moon is crooked, like this old stub,
And being languished seen...
Our night biplane U-2, flying up,
Is rattling with its spring.

My dear comrade, safe way to you!
Comrade, safe way all through!
Fly in where you are flying to,
Fly where you flew from, do!

Maybe this Leningrader needs -
This crooked moon in the way?..
The ground - the soldier's bed meets -
With a chill cold today.
