За зелёным лугом
Тын или ограда,
И на всю округу
Тополей отрада.

Рядом, недалечко,
Протекает речка.
Возле этой речки
Сосенки - как свечки!

Реченька-забава,
Берега крутые,
В заводях - купавы
Плечи золотые!

И сошлись дороги,
Как слетелись гуси,
Там, где моет ноги
Белые Маруся*;

Где рукой затейной
На песке откоса
Лютики иль вейник
Заплетает в косы;

Где цветёт калина,
Где над самым плёсом
Ветви наклонила
Белая берёза.

Alexander Prokofiev «Behind the green grassland…», poem «Russia»

Behind the green grassland -
There's a hedge, or a fence,
And throughout the whole land -
There's poplar trees' expanse.

Nearby, not far away,
A river flows its way.
Near this river, at hand,
Like candles - pine trees stand!

River-fun’s with fast flow
And steep banks to bolden,
From the depth - lilies grow
With the shoulders golden!

Have converged roads, like geese
Fly together and cram,
Where Marusya trods with
Her white feet to wash them*;

Where with her able hand,
Buttercups or reeds fair,
She plaits, on the slope's sand,
Just them into her hair;

Where blooms the guelder rose,
Above the river bends,
Right where a white birch grows
And by its soft boughs bends.
