Не должен быть очень несчастным
И, главное, скрытным. О нет! —
Чтоб быть современнику ясным,
Весь настежь распахнут поэт.

И рампа торчит под ногами,
Все мертвенно, пусто, светло,
Лайм-лайта позорное пламя
Его заклеймило чело.

А каждый читатель как тайна,
Как в землю закопанный клад,
Пусть самый последний, случайный,
Всю жизнь промолчавший подряд.

Там всё, что природа запрячет,
Когда ей угодно, от нас.
Там кто-то беспомощно плачет
В какой-то назначенный час.

И сколько там сумрака ночи,
И тени, и сколько прохлад,
Там те незнакомые очи
До света со мной говорят,

За что-то меня упрекают
И в чем-то согласны со мной...
Так исповедь льётся немая,
Беседы блаженнейший зной.

Наш век на земле быстротечен
И тесен назначенный круг,
А он неизменен и вечен —
Поэта неведомый друг.

He shouldn't be unhappy much; hear,
The main thing, not secretive too! —
To be to contemporaries clear,
A poet is wide open through.

Ramp sticks out at his feet, enclosing,
All is deathly, empty and bright,
Limelight's flame with a shameful glossing
Has stigmatized his forehead wide.

Each reader's like one enigmatic,
Like a trove, dug in the earth deep,
Even the last, random, phlegmatic,
Keeping mum whole life, as in sleep.

Everything, that the nature hides there,
Whenever she pleases, from our eyes,
There someone cries with the helpless air
At some appointed hour precise.

And how much there a night darkness grows,
And shadow, and coolness, and fog.
Also, there unfamiliar eyes those
Hold with me until dawn the talk,

In something, they reproach me, lashing,
In something, with me they agree...
This way, flows the silent confession,
The speaking's most blissful heat free.

Our time on the earth is too fleeting,
Appointed circle's narrow too,
But unchanged, eternally reading —
The poet's friend, unknown and true.
