Мне папа купюру, доллар дал,
А я, как разумный сын,
На две четвертинки блестящих сменял,
Два больше, ведь, чем один!

Я взял свои денежки и обменял:
За четвертинки дал Лу
Три дайма. Малыш наверно не знал
Что три, точно, больше двух!

Потом подошёл слепой, старый Бат,
Своей слепоты не учёл,
За даймы четыре мне никеля дал.
Четыре побольше трех!

Я никели к Кумбсу решил отнести
В лавку кормов и семян,
И этот дурак дал пять пенсов за них,
Четыре меньше, чем  пять!

Потом показал результаты Отцу,
Лицо покраснело враз,
Глаза он закрыл, и слова сказать
Не мог, своим сыном гордясь!

Smart

My dad gave me one dollar bill

Just then, along came old blind Bates 
And just 'cause he can’t see 
He gave me four nickels for my three dimes, 
And four is more than three! 

And I took the nickels to Hiram Coombs 
Down at the seed-feed store, 
And the fool gave me five pennies for them, 
And five is more than four! 

And then I went and showed my dad, 
And he got red in the cheeks 
And closed his eyes and shook his head— 
Too proud of me to speak!
