I entered a cage, a wild beast's containment,
Used a nail to tattoo my nickname in prison,
Lived by the sea with roulette as my entertainment,   
Dined with some dapper for hell knows what reason,
Stood on a glacier, with half the world to amaze me,
Had my time to be ripped apart and to drown,
Left the land that had nourished and raised me,
Those who forgot me would make for a whole town.
I roamed the steppes that remembered the Hun raider,
Dressed in style that returned after going out,
Sowed rye, covered barns with tar paper,
And drank all but dry water, no doubt. 
I let the raven-black eye of convoy haunt my nightmare,
Consumed the bread of exile, crusty or salty,
Let my throat make all sounds but howl in despair,
Finally took on whisper; and now I'm forty.
What about my life? It happened to not go by fleetly.
The hurt of loss is my only compassion, I fear,
But until they glut my mouth with dirt completely,
Words of gratitude are all they will ever hear.

Я входил вместо дикого зверя в клетку,
выжигал свой срок и кликуху гвоздем в бараке,
жил у моря, играл в рулетку,
обедал черт знает с кем во фраке.
С высоты ледника я озирал полмира,
трижды тонул, дважды бывал распорот.
Бросил страну, что меня вскормила.
Из забывших меня можно составить город.
Я слонялся в степях, помнящих вопли гунна,
надевал на себя что сызнова входит в моду,
сеял рожь, покрывал черной толью гумна
и не пил только сухую воду.
Я впустил в свои сны вороненый зрачок конвоя,
жрал хлеб изгнанья, не оставляя корок.
Позволял своим связкам все звуки, помимо воя;
перешел на шепот. Теперь мне сорок.
Что сказать мне о жизни? Что оказалась длинной.
Только с горем я чувствую солидарность.
Но пока мне рот не забили глиной,
из него раздаваться будет лишь благодарность
