Betrothed to Righteousness might be by Emily Dicki
Со святостью душа,
Но к розовости склонен нрав,
Что он охоч вкушать...
[David Preest:
This poem is the whole of a letter (L993)
sent to an unknown recipient. Emily seems
to be saying thank you for a gift of ‘Pinks’
in a teasing fashion. Goodness is ‘an
Ecstasy discreet,’ but human nature such
as mine absolutely relishes eating the
‘Pinks’ which you sent me.
The ‘Pinks’ could be cakes, or perhaps
even peaches, as in a letter (L1019) of
autumn 1885 to Mrs Frederick Tuckerman
Emily says, ‘I have never taken a Peach in
my Hand, so late in the Year. My Lips, also,
are guiltless of that pink experience.’]

Betrothed to Righteousness might be
An Ecstasy discreet
But Nature relishes the Pinks
Which she was taught to eat --
