Как облаков вуаль мы пред луной;
Летим вперед, трепещем, светим,
Тьму испещряя яркой полосой,
Исчезли ночи, иx нет на свете:

Как струны мы давно забытых лир,
Что вторят разным состояньям в нас,
Не повторяя звук, входящий в мир,
Заклят кой будто-бы в последний раз.

Мы спим. И сновиденье травит сон;
Встаем. И мысль день испортить может;
Смех, довод, постиженье, плач и стон
Захватывают иль не тревожат:

И р^авно всё! Смеёмся иль грустим —
Для чувства вовсе нет преград и стен:
И ты, вчерашний, завтра стал иным;
Не знает Переменчивость измен.


          

                Mutability

We are as clouds that veil the midnight moon;
How restlessly they speed, and gleam, and quiver,
Streaking the darkness radiantly!—yet soon
Night closes round, and they are lost forever:

Or like forgotten lyres, whose dissonant strings
Give various response to each varying blast,
To whose frail frame no second motion brings
One mood or modulation like the last.

We rest.—A dream has power to poison sleep;
We rise.—One wandering thought pollutes the day;
We feel, conceive or reason, laugh or weep;
Embrace fond woe, or cast our cares away:

It is the same!—For, be it joy or sorrow,
The path of its departure still is free:
Man's yesterday may ne'er be like his morrow;
Nought may endure but mutability!

This short poem, often simply titled ‘To—’, is one of Shelley’s best-known poems thanks to its opening two lines: ‘Music, when soft voices die, / Vibrates in the memory’. The poem was written in 1821, just one year before Shelley drowned, and first published in Posthumous Poems of Percy Bysshe Shelley in 1824 with a preface by Shelley’s widow, the Frankenstein author Mary Shelley.
