Рецензия на «Yannis Ritsos - from Vigilance 1941-2 - The Silent Season 1 - Ch» (Jena Woodhouse)

This is not only an example of a masterly translation, but also one of the most skilful handling of free verse, so that it does not drag or limp. I can feel how this poem is charged with energy, so much so that it is enough just to look at it in order to touch the metaphysical. This is what I myself value most in poetry. I look forward to subsequent translations. It is amazing how Ritsos' social/solialistic aspirations can occlude his purely poetical aspect for a reader. It happened to me: I did not see the real Ritsos behind the communist and fighter for social justice. Thank you for opening my eyes: I only wish I was more attentive before... I have only myself to blame, in this matter as in many others. But it is better late than never.

Oh thank you, Vlanes! To my mind Ritsos is the purest and most passionate of poets. He had too much integrity to allow politics to diminish the artistic value of his work, but his social and political values and convictions were such that he could not exclude them either. The poetry is, I think, intrinsic to the political perceptions, and vice versa, and the political beliefs are of an essentially humanitarian and humanist order, never narrowly sectarian. For this reason his poetry nourishes the whole person. There is breadth and depth to his work, and breath and substance. Also modesty and a quality of translucency I associate specifically with Ritsos. When I read the poems of this period, they grasp me by the hand and lead me out onto the road. They take me on their journey. They enable the reader to become an extension of the poem, and the poem an extension of the reader's experience. This is why I love Ritsos so much. He is an icon.
