The goal of the Listener’s Companion series is to give readers a deeper
understanding of pivotal musical genres and the creative work of their
iconic practitioners. This is accomplished in an inclusive manner that
does not require extensive music training or elitist shoulder rubbing.
Series contributors recreate specific listening experiences so readers
can grasp the influence of historical context on the compositional character and social milieu in which the music emerged. By situating readers in the various environments in which composers generated and
audiences listened to the music in question, Listener’s Companion authors deepen for readers their enjoyment and appreciation of this remarkable art form. Often drawing on their expertise as performers and
scholars, contributors expand our understanding of major musical genres and the achievements of artists within those genres, emphasizing
throughout music as a lived listening experience.
