Checkmate
He answered with E-5.
In this fierce tournament I know
I must be first to thrive!
Knight to F-3, what will he say?
He blocks with C-6 to defend.
I see your little game today,
Go on and take me, little friend!
We start to clear the board apace,
My Bishop goes to C-4!
The black pawns know a thing or case,
From D-7 moves the corps!
He guards his camp quite well, it's true,
But we will push ahead!
My second Knight joins in to woo
The victory instead.
He brings his Bishop to the fray,
What is our tricky guest?
It makes me yawn the hours away,
Yet he plays well, no jest!
Now Castling! That is cool and wise
To keep my monarch sound.
I feel a sudden, bold surprise:
A fork upon the Queen unbound!
I set a trap to catch the foe,
Two Knights advance in line!
A check, the King is forced to go,
My captured pawns outshine.
The bloody battle has begun,
A Bishop takes his mate!
The pawns clash hard, the race is run,
The black ranks meet their fate.
The King and Queen are stripped of aid,
No rescue comes in time!
A fatal check from left is played,
In rhythm and in rhyme.
Two Rooks rush forward to attack,
No force can stop their might!
Like tanks they sweep along the track,
And crush the final line of white.
A white flag waves — the King is dead!
Surrounded on all sides.
The final move is done and said,
Checkmate, my friend, betides!
