Ballad To Be Happy
Based on the poem
Баллада «Быть счастливым»
I have made a translation.
To be myself — oh, how I longed for this!
I stood my ground.
The path and pain won't cease,
But I endured, survived, and found my bliss,
To find my true and only self-release.
In it — the patience, love that's soft and deep,
The first fine lines of joy upon my face.
The will to be and grow is mine to keep,
And stronger than the battles I must face.
The bitter meetings, partings filled with spite,
At times will bring a heavy, weary gloom,
But I will know when day has turned to night:
A tender kindness touches through the room.
The days of old now sink beyond the sun,
Like first hard-built abodes we call our own.
I've sweetened soul, my lonely race is run,
My core remains — my spirit has a home.
A page of fate is written in my hand,
I turn it over, free of anxious fright.
I walk my road, and wonder in this
land Won't meet my eyes unless I am the light.
I hold my course like that grey-haired old man,
Who watched the sea for his beloved bride.
His love was spurned by some unjust cruel plan:
His mother's choice for him was cast aside.
The story stretches like a single thread,
That reached the fabric's edge and waits its turn.
I need to catch this line and move ahead,
Lest in the self-deceit I crash and burn.
Let burn to ash what can't be called to life.
The pattern now is mine to weave and dare.
My fate's own needle cuts through joy and strife,
Just as I always wanted, standing there.
I walk my path. From step to steady step.
The self I built is who I am today.
With love and warmth each single glance is swept,
So only joy within my house will stay.
A happy home is not a sudden prize —
It grows where love and tender care combine.
I have this wealth beneath the open skies,
And this bright light — my finest work — is mine.
Where will I go? My everlasting stars
Are leading me when darkness fills the place.
To walk the earth beneath the sun is ours,
It's never late to meet the sun's embrace.
My path is forth. And I am moving forth,
To meet each dawn and greet it with my heart.
