Ballad of the Poker Face

Ladies and gentlemen, what a marvelous night!
So glad to see you all — welcome to the light.
Tonight I'll share a secret, one you've heard before:
A serious face is not a sign of brains — what's more —

Men and women, politicians, artists in a row —
They carry that grave look, so important, slow and low.
But what's hiding underneath? Let me pull back the lace:
Arrogance and ignorance, rudeness — and a vacant space.

As for me — I walk through life with a grin from ear to ear,
No need to look smarter than I am — that much is clear.
A serious face is not a sign of brains, you see —
It's just a fancy curtain for an empty head, you see.

Oh, a serious face — it's so terribly grand!
I know so many serious people in this land.
They never learned to smile, they're always deep in thought —
But hollow as a Halloween pumpkin, all for naught.

Take Madame Secretary, a newspaper star —
By rank, she has to look important, yes, by far.
A fishwife from the market — but give her a serious pose,
And suddenly she's Socrates — God only knows.

As for me — I walk through life with a grin from ear to ear,
No need to look smarter than I am — that much is clear.
A serious face is not a sign of brains, you see —
It's just a fancy curtain for an empty head, you see.

And here comes a citizen — round belly, short of breath,
He puffs and sweats when he talks, like a marathon of death.
Always dead serious, no matter what he says —
The biggest pile of nonsense, to everyone he sways.

He's important, nonchalant, he's got power on his side,
His brain's a mansion — no one's home, nothing stays inside.
But a serious face is not a sign of brains, my friends —
That citizen's just a fool — the story ends.

As for me — I walk through life with a grin from ear to ear,
No need to look smarter than I am — that much is clear.
A serious face is not a sign of brains, you see —
It's just a fancy curtain for an empty head, you see.

So draw your own conclusions, ladies and gents,
What matters more — appearances? Common sense?
To seem, to be — that ancient, crooked scale —
Just take off your sour masks, let your faces sail.

The world will seem in technicolor, bright and new,
The bore next door — almost pleasant, almost true.
A serious face puts you in a cage — away from life, up high alone,
Creates a fake you — a jester with a crown, a heart of stone.

As for me — I walk through life with a grin from ear to ear,
No need to look smarter than I am — that much is clear.
A serious face is not a sign of brains, you see —
It's just a fancy curtain for an empty head, you see.

As for me — I walk through life with a grin from ear to ear,
No need to look smarter than I am — that much is clear.
A serious face is not a sign of brains, you see —
It's just a fancy curtain for an empty head, you see.

As for me — I walk through life with a grin from ear to ear…
No need to look smarter than I am… that much is clear…
