Introductory Note: This poem is an ironic look at the struggles of modern artists, full of bohemian spirit, artistic rebellion, and references to the famous tragic romance between Amedeo Modigliani and the Russian poet Anna Akhmatova.

It’s all okay. The wine is poured,
A ruby spark behind the pane.
Today I’m Modigliani, Lord,
A modern clone I’ve built again.

I’ve spent the years to find the way,
In love with lines of someone else.
You’re no Akhmatova, I’d say,
A glance, a bow is all that tells.

You're posing, pretending to be she,
With rhymes of copper and Amedee.
You are even lovelier to me,
Your changing style is fair to see.

From pay to pay we try to live,
No sales, the budget cracks and ends.
Like a suitcase with no handle left to give —
Too sad to drop, and we lack the funds.

Neglect will make the anger grow,
Until a sudden order’s signed.
Museums are full of fakes, you know,
Our art is of the junkest kind.

The till is open, wide and bright,
Antique collectors start to call.
I’ll paint Picasso for your sight,
Miro, Kandinsky — damn them all!

Art critics on the screen appear,
Like dying lions in their pride.
But Modigliani’s sketches here
I recreate from deep inside.
