Borrowed Hour
A glass waits beside your hand.
The elevator sighs below us,
Like a secret leaving town.
You say the room is beautiful;
I watch you study the door.
There are a hundred ways to stay here,
You don't need one more.
Stay until the last pour settles,
Stay until the candles thin.
Let the whole high floor keep turning,
While I learn where you begin.
No promises in crystal language,
No grand ending dressed in blue,
Just this borrowed hour above it all,
And the quiet next to you.
Your coat rests on the piano,
Rain beads along the glass.
The skyline trades its silver faces
Every time a taxi passes.
You laugh at something I forgot,
Then soften when you see
That every polished thing around us
Still can't make you leave.
Stay until the last pour settles,
Stay until the candles thin.
Let the whole high floor keep turning,
While I learn where you begin.
No promises in crystal language,
No grand ending dressed in blue,
Just this borrowed hour above it all,
And the quiet next to you.
If morning finds us changed,
Let it find us honest.
If the room becomes a memory,
We were here, and we were conscious.
Stay until the last pour settles,
Stay until the candles thin.
Let the whole high floor keep turning,
While I learn where you begin.
No promises in crystal language,
No grand ending dressed in blue,
Just this borrowed hour above it all,
And the quiet next to you.
The elevator waits below us,
But neither one moves yet.
