Christ

Born in the filth of a manger's breath,
A king of nothing, a prince of death.
They came with gold, they came with myrrh,
But the cross was waiting, I always knew where.

I walked on water, I healed the blind,
But the deaf still listened to the devil's mind.
They praised my name on a donkey's ride,
Then screamed for blood when the tide turned wide.

Christ! Christ! Nailed to the wood!
Christ! Christ! I bled where I stood!
They crowned me with thorns — and called me a fraud,
Christ! Christ! The son of a god!

Forty days in the desert heat,
The serpent offered me the world at my feet.
I chose the father, I chose the pain,
And I got a cross for the choice I made.

Gethsemane — I sweat like blood,
I begged for the cup to pass where I stood.
But the soldiers came with their torches and steel,
And I healed the ear of the man who would kill.

Christ! Christ! Nailed to the wood!
Christ! Christ! I bled where I stood!
They crowned me with thorns — and called me a fraud,
Christ! Christ! The son of a god!

"Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?"
My own father turned his face away from me.
The sky went black, the earth did quake,
The temple veil tore for my mother's sake.

Christ! Christ! Nailed to the wood!
Christ! Christ! I bled where I stood!
They crowned me with thorns — and called me a fraud,
Christ! Christ! The son of a god!

...It is finished...
...It is finished...
...Father, forgive them...
...They know not what they do...
