Magdalene

Seven demons in my head, they screamed my name,
A thousand nights of fire, a thousand nights of shame.
They cast them out with a word, a touch, a stare,
And left me standing naked in the desert air.

I followed him through the dust and the stone,
A woman with no country, a woman with no throne.
They whispered "whore" and "sinner" behind my back,
But I walked beside him on the narrowest track.

Magdalene! Magdalene! I bore the cross!
Magdalene! Magdalene! I counted the loss!
They called me unclean — but I stood in the light,
Magdalene! Magdalene! I stayed through the night!

I stood at the foot of the execution hill,
I watched the blood run and the sky turn still.
The others fled — Peter denied,
But I never left him, I never lied.

They sealed the tomb with a soldier's seal,
But love is a wound that refuses to heal.
I came with spices before the dawn,
To find the stone rolled away — and he was gone.

Magdalene! Magdalene! I bore the cross!
Magdalene! Magdalene! I counted the loss!
They called me unclean — but I stood in the light,
Magdalene! Magdalene! I stayed through the night!

I saw him rise through the garden mist,
I reached for his hand — but he said "Do not touch this."
I was the first to witness the flame,
The first to speak the unspoken name.

Magdalene! Magdalene! I bore the cross!
Magdalene! Magdalene! I counted the loss!
They called me unclean — but I stood in the light,
Magdalene! Magdalene! I stayed through the night!

...They called me unclean...
...I stayed through the night...
...I am the first witness...
...I am the light...
