I do not like dolls

I do not like dolls.
They look human, too much so.
They seem alive to the eye,
Yet inside, they are dead as stone.

I do not like masks.
They look like dolls in disguise.
They seem to breathe, seem alive,
Yet there is death behind their eyes.

Their eyes are windows made of glass,
Beyond them – silence, hollow space.
No breath, no pain, no whispered sound,
Just someone else’s borrowed face.

I fear this strange and dreadful truth –
Where no clear line can be defined:
If a mask can live without a heart,
Then hearts themselves are left behind.

And sometimes, among living faces,
I catch that familiar chill –
As though the dolls stand there and watch,
Pretending they are living still.
