In the early twilight

Перевод-адаптация стихотворения А. Соболя "В ранних сумерках"

In early dusk, you shimmer, flecked with gold;
Beyond the trailing mists of silver-grey,
Your sleepy lashes, bright with dew, still hold
The fading light and sorrowfully sway.

You scatter stars like tears into the night,
Unbidden, falling soundlessly away.
You veil the panes with dawn’s slow, languid light
And hide your saddest thoughts beneath the day.

At times you call where distant winds have blown,
As though some loss still trembled in your cry.
Rain’s shadow walks, its arm linked with your own,
And both of you weep to the ashen sky.

At last, with bitterness too hard to bear,
Half-choked by all the hurt you will not show,
Forever lost in autumn and despair,
You cannot hear these words, and cannot know:

Your arms smell of the heather, wood that lies
Still drowsing in the sunlight’s amber glow;
Of rhinestone stars strewn over midnight skies,
And phrases lost in haste so long ago.

Those early dusks will slip into the past;
Your lashes will brush off the misty grey.
The shadows of cold rain will fade at last
Behind the days that carry them away.

Once more dusk hums with heather through the gloom,
And long-lost phrases bloom before your eyes.
The nights grow heady with warm wood’s perfume
Beneath the distant, rhinestone-studded skies.
