===========================
I set the kettle by the window, pencil sharpened, morning wide
Two languages upon the table, two ways of seeing side by side
First I read the page for breathing, where the argument turns and bends
Then I weigh a living word against the promise it must send
I mark the names and dates in columns, circle every borrowed phrase
Check the rhythm, check the meaning, check the customs of the days
Not a mirror, not a copy, but a bridge that must hold true
I write until the far-off sentence sounds at home when spoken through
Line by line, I listen close
To what the silence almost knows
I carry the meaning over
I give it a room and a door
I turn the page for a new reader
So the old words can travel once more
With a dictionary open beside me
And the whole wide world in view
I carry the meaning over
And bring its voice back to you
Jerome of Stridon crossed the desert, gave the Latin Bible breath
William Tyndale shaped the English scriptures, paid his freedom and his death
Kumarajiva brought the sutras through the mountain passes east
Every translator leaves a pathway where two distant tongues can meet
Vasily Zhukovsky carried ballads, myths, and epics into song
Samuil Marshak made the children’s worlds feel bright and clear and strong
Nora Gal found the human heartbeat in a foreign novel’s frame
Natalia Volzhina crossed the pages, keeping wonder in the name
Line by line, I listen close
To what the silence almost knows
I carry the meaning over
I give it a room and a door
I turn the page for a new reader
So the old words can travel once more
With a dictionary open beside me
And the whole wide world in view
I carry the meaning over
And bring its voice back to you
Some words arrive with dust on them
Some come laughing, some come worn
Some belong to a grandmother
Some are waiting to be born
I ask the sentence what it’s hiding
I ask the heart what it can bear
Then I build a faithful answer
With a little music there
I carry the meaning over
I give it a room and a door
I turn the page for a new reader
So the old words can travel once more
From Balmont to Vaisbrot’s witness
From Kalashnikova’s view
Kashkin, Pasternak, Nagibin
Every bridge comes shining through
I carry the meaning over
Till the distance disappears
I carry the meaning over
And make a meeting of the years
Line by line, the world grows nearer
Word by word, the page turns true
I carry the meaning over
And bring its voice back to you
