Until We Meet Again
With muted silver, wet with rain,
The summer paid autumn its due;
The dampened dusk concealed the plain,
And darkened leaves the summer knew.
On summer’s final, fading day,
The misty heavens veiled their hue;
An old life chapter slipped away,
And sank into the depths of time.
Grey sky-sockets drifted overhead,
Concealing paths from human view,
Between the trunks of weeping willows,
In distant parks and fields of blue.
The quiet rain, a typesetter,
Wove pages through the world anew,
Revealing to each passer-by
An autumn exclusive, fresh and new.
Time, like wet silk, sank to its knees,
Slipped softly through the days gone by,
And came to meet the ancient world
Beneath the vast and timeless sky.
The vast old world stood on its stage,
A weathered stage worn smooth by time;
Its scenery would soon be changed,
As life turned to another page.
The air, like an old and faithful friend,
Went shyly wandering street by street,
And hid the beauty of summer days
In milky mist, so soft and sweet.
The living Earth felt no regret;
She knows the seasons come and go.
She waits for autumn’s cloth to spread—
For September and October’s show.
The evening dimmed the glassy pane
And softened houses, paths and yards;
The quiet courtyards slept again,
As night stood watch behind the guards.
And once again I whisper low:
Not “farewell”—only “till we meet.”
May summer sleep through winter’s snow,
And wake beneath the sun’s warm heat.
