Forest Fire
A forest fire broke out one day,
A deadly heat was on its way,
It burned all living things around -
All fled in fear across the ground.
The Hare then called the beasts to stay:
"Let's dig a trench without delay
With horn, with hoof, or with a paw!" -
The fire died, obeying law.
"Hooray!", the forest people roared. -
"Let heroes be with praise adored!"
Then all the animals turned out
To solve a council-table doubt:
Who quenched the fire, who was the soul
That kept the blazing flames in check?
The Wolf then spoke and made a case,
That Fox had saved the woodland space,
While Hare had played no part at all -
He could not answer such a call.
The Fox was hugged with joy and pride,
With honors showered from every side,
While Hare just hopped along his way...
And no one asked for him to stay...
Moral:
It happens often, to our rue:
One does the work, another gets the due.

Пожар в лесу

Случился раз в лесу пожар,
Шёл от огня ужасный жар,
Сжигал живое он вокруг -
Все побежали в страхе. Вдруг
Стал Заяц всех зверей сзывать:
"Давай канаву тут копать
Рогами,лапой иль копытом!" -
Погас огонь и пламя сбито.
"Ура!", - взревел лесной народ. -
"Героям слава и почёт!"
Потом звериный был совет,
Чтобы решить - герой иль нет,
Тот,кто пожар сей потушил,
И пламя кто остановил.
Сказал и Волк свои слова,
Что подняла зверей Лиса,
А Заяц,явно,не удел -
Навряд ли он бы так сумел.
Лису тут стали обнимать,
Ей много почестей давать,
А Заяц мимо поскакал...
Его никто не задержал...
Бывает часто так порой:
Пахал один - другой герой.
