Gruffalo Granny
The Gruffalo said to his daughter one day, “Your Gruffalo Granny is coming to stay.” “Tell me about her, Daddy, do!“
Will she be just like me and you?”
Not exactly – the Gruffalo said
Her fur is grey
And her prickles are red
She's very bright
She can read and write
And she has an ENORMOUS appetite.
We*d better go hunting for something good. We*ll have to go into the deep dark wood!
They walked and walked till they reached some rocks
And there sat a tasty-looking fox.
“Aha!" said the Gruffalo, cock-a-hoop,
“Im certain that Granny likes foxtail soup.” The fox gave a start, then shook his head
‘Owl pizza is quite a lot nicer,"
“Too true!” said the owl. “But then of course
she might prefer snake with strawberry sauce.”
“Not so,” said the snake. “I thought you knew
That grandmothers always adore mouse stew.”
They walked some more till they spotted a mouse
Who was telling stories outside his house.
Did you all know how long ago
I tricked an enormous Gruffa...
Oh!!!
They carried him back to the gruffalo cave
Where the little brown mouse felt a bit less brave.
They popped him into a cage of sticks
And told him sternly, “No more tricks!”
The Gruffalo filled up a great big pot
And when the water was nice and hot
He threw in some carrots to start the stew.
Then said to the mouse, "And now for YOU!
“I’m ready,” the mouse said. “Do your worst
But wouldn’t you like a story first?”
And he started a story about a witch
And her animal friends who fell into a ditch.
Along came a dragon who licked his lips
And said that he planned to eat witch with chips.
“What happens next?” “Oh, the next part’s the best,
But its bedtime. Tomorrow I’ll tell you the rest.”
Fhe mouse stayed awake till the gruffalos snored
Then secretly, slyly, he nibbled and gnawed.
Early next morning the gruffalos woke.
The mouse was asleep, so they gave him a poke.
They gave him a tickle, they gave him a shake.
“The STORY!” they yelled, but he just wouldn’t wake.
So they spent the whole day finding things for their stew:
A cabbage, some leeks and a turnip or two.
At last the mouse stirred and his eyes opened wide.
“The story! The STORY!” the gruffalos cried.
So he finished the story, then started another,
The tale of a monkey in search of his mother.
A butterfly friend who was tagging along
Was trying to help but kept getting it wrong.
“What happens next?” “Oh, the next part’s the best,
But you’re sleepy. Tomorrow I’ll tell you the rest.”
The mouse stayed awake till he heard them both snore,
Then secretly, slyly, he nibbled some more.
The gruffalos woke when the sun shone bright,
But the mouse slumbered soundly from morning till night.
Again they collected more stuff for their stew:
Peas, beans and greens, and an onion or two.
At last the mouse stirred and his eyes opened wide.
“The story! The STORY!” the gruffalos cried.
“The water is hot, so - ready or not
- Finish the story, then into the pot!”
So he finished the story, then started the talk
Of a tiny snail and a humpback whale.
Who travelled the world till the whale lost his way
And ended up beached on the shore of a bay.
“What happens next?” “Oh, the next part’s the best,
But you’re yawning. Tomorrow I’ll tell you the rest.”
Once again, while the gruffalos snored
The mouse went on nibbling. He nibbled and gnawed.
He gnawed and he nibbled till suddenly- SNAP
-He gnawed through the twig, and then slipped through the gap.
Next morning the gruffalos got out of bed
Only to find that their dinner had fled.
Just then came a voice: “I’m here! Hello!” And in walked . . .
Gruffalo Granny
“Hello, Granny Gruffalo! How do you do?”
“I’m HUNGRY,” said Granny. Then, “Do I smell stew?”
The Gruffalo nodded, and heated the water.
He felt very worried, and so did his daughter.
But speedily, greedily, Grandmother slurped
And after three helpings she happily burped.
“This stew is delicious! A wonderful treat!
I’m glad you remembered IVe given up meat.”
Gruffalo Granny unpacked, and said, “Look!
I’ve brought you a present - a pen and a book.”
Then her grandchild recited the stories she’d heard
And Gruffalo Granny wrote down every word.
“Tomorrow,” she promised, “I’ll read them to you.
But...
now for some more ol that glorious stew!”
