Why was I given
to watch the world just tear it down?
Why in this fire of grief, still reeling,
do I keep burning myself out?
Why were these colors given me,
to watch the daylight fade and fall?
Why in this dark and fevered dance
do I betray and lose them all?
Why were these sounds given at all,
to hear how silence screams at night?
Why set between us such a wall,
and keep you always out of sight?
Why were these thoughts put in my head,
to learn that truth is nowhere found?
Sad notes hang frozen, mute and dead
in my dark flat without a sound...
Why was I given these two hands,
to build what crumbles in a breath?
Why, while this endless distance stands,
is a cry of pain all I have left?
Why give me words, whole sentences,
when no one hears a word I say?
My useless fight makes no more sense —
our love has breathed itself away...
Why were these tears put in my eyes,
to fall while all the world stays mute?
Why weep in poems, prose, and lines,
when in the night you cry out too?
Why are there dreams still left in me
when waking life is cold and gray?
Could you, somewhere, possibly
feel something for me anyway?
Why do these feelings burn so strong,
while every touch stays feather-light?
You know... this distance feels all wrong —
that we're so far apart tonight...
