The Journey Through Life, or the Reflection in the Eyes of a Homeless Man
He left the house early in the morning, when the city was still asleep, and the streets were empty as the pages of an unwritten book. His house stood at the edge, where the asphalt turned into a dirt road, and the road into a field, beyond which the forest began. But he did not go into the forest. He went into the city, because he knew: life is not a field and not a forest, life is streets, and through these streets one must walk to the end.
The first street was called Childhood. It was wide and bright, the houses on it were low, and the windows were large, and in each window sat people and looked at him with a smile. He walked and felt the asphalt spring beneath his feet, felt the air filled with something sweet, as if someone invisible had scattered powdered sugar over the city. On this street he met a boy who was flying a paper kite. The kite soared high, but suddenly the string snapped, and the kite fell onto the roof of a house. The boy began to cry. He approached the boy and said: don't cry, I will buy you a new one. But the boy answered: no, I want this one. And then he understood that in life there are losses that cannot be replaced.
The second street was called Youth. It was narrow and crooked, the houses on it stood close to one another, and the windows were curtained. On this street he met a girl with long hair who was looking at him from a window. He approached the window and said: come out. She came out, and they walked together. They walked for a long time, and the street kept narrowing, until it turned into an alley, and the alley into a dead end. In the dead end stood an old man with a broom. The old man said: there is no road further. But the girl said: there is. And she pointed at the wall. The wall was built of glass bricks, and in each brick their faces were reflected. He approached the wall and saw himself — young, handsome, full of strength. But in the reflection beside him stood someone else. It was a homeless man. The homeless man sat crouched by the wall and looked at him. And in the eyes of the homeless man he saw himself — not as in the glass, but the real one, with all his fears and doubts. He turned away and walked off.
The third street was called Maturity. It was straight and wide, but paved with stone, and each stone was polished to a shine. On this street stood tall houses with cupolas, and in the cupolas the sky was reflected. He walked and felt the stones slipping beneath his feet, felt the air growing heavy. On this street he met a woman with a child in her arms. The woman said: help. He took the child, and the child began to cry. He tried to calm him, but could not. Then the woman said: give him back. He gave him back, and the child fell silent. And he understood that not everything can be fixed, that there are things that do not yield to your will.
On this street he saw the homeless man again. The homeless man sat on the steps of one of the houses and warmed himself in the sun. He approached the homeless man and asked: who are you? The homeless man answered: I am you. I am your reflection. I am what you suppress within yourself. I am your shadow. He looked into the homeless man's eyes and saw there his entire life: childhood, youth, maturity, all his deeds, all his mistakes. And he understood that a homeless man is not simply a person without a home. A homeless man is one who has lost himself. And in that moment he realized that he too was a homeless man, because he had lost himself among the streets, among the houses, among the people.
The fourth street was called Old Age. It was narrow and dark, the houses on it were old, and the windows were closed with shutters. On this street he met an old woman with a cane. The old woman said: I have been waiting for you. He asked: why? She answered: because you are me. She led him into the house, and inside the house it was dark. She lit a candle, and he saw that the house inside was the very house from which he had left in the morning. Everything was in its place: the bed, the table, the chairs. But only now did he understand that this house was not his home. This was the house he had built within himself, but had never been able to live in.
On this street the homeless man appeared again. He stood at the door and held a bell in his hands. The homeless man said: time. And he struck the bell. The sound was deep and long, as if tolling for the dead. And in that sound he heard his own voice — a voice that called him from childhood, from youth, from maturity. He understood that life had passed, and he had never seen himself. He looked into the homeless man's eyes and saw there himself — old, tired, but still alive.
The fifth street was called Death. It was short and led to a square. In the square stood a temple with cupolas, and the cupolas were made of glass. He entered the temple, and inside it was empty. Only the homeless man sat on the floor and looked at him. The homeless man said: you have come. He answered: yes. The homeless man said: look at me. He looked into the homeless man's eyes and saw there his entire life — not as a memory, but as reality. He saw every morning, every day, every evening. He saw every street, every house, every window. He saw every face he had met, every hand he had shaken, every word he had spoken. And in this reflection he saw not only himself, but all the people who had walked the streets together with him. He saw the boy with the paper kite, the girl with long hair, the woman with the child, the old woman with the cane. All of them were in the homeless man's eyes. And all of them were looking at him.
And then he understood: a homeless man is not one person. A homeless man is all people. A homeless man is the reflection of everyone who has lost himself. A homeless man is the city that looks at you with glass eyes. A homeless man is life that passes by while you walk the streets. A homeless man is you.
He left the temple, and the square was empty. Only the homeless man sat on the steps and warmed himself in the sun. He approached the homeless man and sat down beside him. The homeless man said: now you see. He answered: yes, now I see. The homeless man said: and what do you see? He answered: I see myself. The homeless man said: and what will you do? He answered: I will live.
And in that moment he felt something within him break. It was the break of logic that he had carried within himself for so long. Logic said: you must be successful, you must be happy, you must be someone. But life said: you must be yourself. And he chose life. He stood up, walked to the glass wall that surrounded the square, and struck it with his fist. The glass shattered, and blood flowed down his hand. But he did not feel pain. He felt freedom. He had shattered the reflection, and in the broken glass he saw the sky.
And then he turned into a bird. Not literally — he did not begin to fly. But within him something became a bird. Something that had always wanted to fly but had been locked in the cage of logic, in the cage of the herd, in the cage of the house. Now it had broken free. And he walked on — not through streets, but through life. And on every street, in every city, in every person he saw the homeless man. And in the eyes of every homeless man he saw himself. And everyone who looked into the eyes of a homeless man saw themselves. Because a homeless man is not a person without a home. A homeless man is a person without himself. And the one who has found himself is no longer a homeless man. He is a bird. He is Ptah. He is a creator.
He walked through the streets, and the streets were faces. He looked into the faces, and the faces were mirrors. He saw himself in them — different, changing, alive. And he understood that life is not a journey toward a goal. Life is a journey through reflections. And everyone who walks this path, sooner or later, meets a homeless man. And everyone must look into his eyes. And everyone must see themselves there. Because a homeless man is not the end of the path. A homeless man is the beginning. A homeless man is the point from which a swarm of probable events diverges. A homeless man is the bell that tolls for the old life and announces the new. A homeless man is you, as you were, and you, as you will become.
He returned home late in the evening. The house stood at the edge, where the asphalt turned into a dirt road. He entered the house, and the house was empty. But it was not the emptiness of loneliness. It was the emptiness of freedom. He sat by the window and looked out at the street. On the street sat a homeless man, warming himself in the sun. The homeless man looked at him and smiled. And he smiled back. Because he knew: the homeless man is him. And he is the homeless man. And all people are homeless men searching for themselves. And all people are birds who want to fly. And all people are Ptah, who creates the world through the word.
He closed his eyes and saw the swarm of probable events. The branches diverged in all directions, and each branch was a life he could have lived. But he chose this one. And this life was beautiful, because it led from the house to the homeless man, from the homeless man to the bird, from the bird to Ptah. And in this path there was no end, because every end was a beginning. And every homeless man was a reflection. And every reflection was him.
He opened his eyes and saw that the sun had set. On the street it had grown dark. The homeless man stood up and walked away. He watched him go and knew: tomorrow he would leave the house again and walk through the streets. And again he would meet the homeless man. And again he would see himself in his eyes. And this would continue forever, because life is a journey through reflections. And everyone who walks this path will sooner or later understand: a homeless man is not the one who has lost his home. A homeless man is the one who has lost himself. And the one who has found himself is no longer a homeless man. He is a bird. He is Ptah. He is a creator. And he creates the world through the word.
And the word was: I.
Reflection in Reflection: The Story of Two Lovers
The Meeting
She saw him in a mirror. Not in her own — in someone else’s. He was standing by the window of an old shop on the corner of a street where the asphalt turned into cobblestone, and he was looking not at the goods but at himself. But in his reflection, behind his back, she was standing. He did not know it yet. She already knew.
She came closer, and her reflection entered his reflection. Two figures in the glass touched but did not merge. They stood side by side, separated by a thin plane that simultaneously connected and divided them. He felt her presence behind him — with that special sense when the air becomes denser, when space deforms, when you understand that you are being seen. He turned around.
She stood before him. Real. Not in the glass. And at that moment his reflection in the shop window disappeared. Only she remained — in his eyes. And in her eyes only he remained. This was the first reflection in reflection: two people who look at each other and see themselves. But not their former selves, but new selves — those they become in the presence of the other.
“I saw you,” she said.
“Where?”
“In my reflection. You were standing behind my back. But you were not there. You were here.”
He did not understand. She smiled and explained:
“When I look in a mirror, I see myself. But when I look into your eyes, I see myself in you. That is different. That is deeper. That is reflection in reflection.”
The First Recognition
They walked together. Not because they had agreed to, but because they could not do otherwise. The streets diverged to the sides, but they walked along one. The houses looked at them with windows, and in every window they saw themselves — reflected, but not distorted. It was strange and beautiful: the city became a mirror, and they became two rays that reflect each other endlessly.
She said:
“Do you know what a mirror is? It is a surface that does not let through, but returns. A mirror does not create, it shows. But when two mirrors stand opposite each other, infinity arises between them. Reflection in reflection. You see yourself reflected in the other, who is reflected in you. That is love.”
He was silent. He did not know how to say such words. But he felt the same. He felt that when she looked at him, he became larger. Not because she added something to him, but because she reflected what was already in him, but what he himself did not see.
The House with Mirrors
They came to the house where she lived. The house was old, with high ceilings and large windows. In every room hung mirrors. Not because she was vain, but because she needed to see space. She said:
“I do not like emptiness. Mirrors fill it. They show that even in an empty room there is life — your life.”
He entered and saw himself in all the mirrors at once. He saw himself young, old, happy, sad. He saw himself as he had been, and as he could become. And in every reflection, behind his back, she stood. She was everywhere. She was in every one of his reflections, because she had already entered him, and he could not imagine himself without her.
She came up to him and stood beside him. Their reflections joined in one mirror. And then something happened that they did not expect. The reflections began to multiply. One mirror was reflected in another, another in a third, and in each of them they were together. An endless gallery: he and she, she and he, repeating but not identical. Each reflection was slightly different. Somewhere they were younger, somewhere older, somewhere laughing, somewhere crying. But everywhere they were together.
“This is our life,” she said. “All possible versions of our life. All branches. All probabilities. We see them all at once. But we will choose only one.”
“Which one?” he asked.
“The one we will live.”
The Topology of Two
They lay on the floor, among the mirrors, and looked at the ceiling. The ceiling was also mirrored. They saw themselves from above — two bodies, two breaths, two fates, intertwined in one point of space. She said:
“Do you know that we are not two people? We are one field. The field of Order and the field of Chaos. I am Order. You are Chaos. Or the other way around. It does not matter. What matters is that we interact. And from this interaction something third is born. Not you. Not me. But we. Emergence.”
He did not know that word, but he understood. He understood that love is not the sum of two. It is a product. It is what arises between them, in the gap, in the space they create together. This space is theirs together. It belongs neither to him nor to her. It belongs to both of them. And in this space they both are reflected. Reflection in reflection.
She continued:
“When I look at you, I see myself. But not because you are my mirror. But because you are other. You are not me. And precisely therefore I can see myself. If you were me, I would see nothing. You are my boundary. You are where I end and begin. You are my wall and my door.”
He said:
“I do not understand all the words. But I feel. I feel that when you are near, I become myself. Not because you give me something. But because you allow me to be. You do not demand that I be someone. You simply look. And in your gaze I see that I am.”
The Shadow
But love has a shadow. They learned this later. The shadow came into the house with mirrors and stood between them. It was not evil. It was simply different. It was what they hid from each other. It was the homeless man who lives in each of us.
She said:
“Do you see me?” — and pointed at her reflection in the mirror. “This is not me. This is what I show. And where am I, the real one?”
He looked and saw that in the mirror she was smiling, but in reality she was not. In the mirror she was young, but in reality she was tired. In the mirror she was confident, but in reality she was afraid. He understood that his reflection also lied. In the mirror he was strong, but in reality he was weak. In the mirror he was calm, but in reality he was in panic.
“We show each other not ourselves, but our reflections,” she said. “We love not each other, but the reflections of each other. That is frightening.”
He took her by the hand and led her to the largest mirror. He said:
“Look. Do you see us? We stand side by side. But between us is glass. We do not touch. We are reflected. But reflection is not us. It is light that comes from us and returns. We are not reflection. We are the source.”
She cried. He embraced her. And at that moment the mirror cracked. It did not break — it cracked. A thin line passed through the glass, dividing their reflections. But they did not separate. They became closer. Because the crack showed: reflection is imperfect. And they are real.
The House Without Mirrors
They left the house with mirrors. They understood that mirrors were not needed. They had been needed only to see: they were not needed. They found a small house by the sea, where there was not a single mirror. Only windows. And in the windows — the sea. And in the sea — the sky. And in the sky — the sun. And in the sun — they. Because they looked at the world not in order to see themselves, but in order to see the world. And in this seeing of the world they saw each other.
She said:
“I no longer want to see myself. I want to see you.”
He said:
“And I want to see you. And through you — the world.”
They sat on the shore and looked at the water. The water reflected the sky. The sky reflected the water. Endless reflection in reflection. But they did not seek themselves in this reflection. They simply were. Together. And that was enough.
Illness
Then she became ill. The illness was slow, like a sunset. She faded, but did not disappear. She became transparent, like glass. He saw through her. He saw her fear, her pain, her love. And he did not turn away. He looked. He reflected her. And in his eyes she saw herself — not sick, not dying, but alive. Alive in him.
She said:
“When I die, will you look in the mirror and see me?”
He answered:
“I will not look in the mirror. I will look into myself. And there I will see you. Because you are in me. You are not a reflection. You are part of me. You are my I, which became larger because you entered it.”
She smiled and closed her eyes. And at that moment he saw how her reflection in his eyes became deeper. It did not disappear. It went deeper. It became part of him. Reflection in reflection. Infinity.
After
He remained alone. But not lonely. Because she was in him. He looked at the sea and saw her. He looked at the sky and saw her. He looked into himself and saw her. She was everywhere. Not as a ghost. As reality. As what had been and what remained.
He understood that love is not a meeting. It is a merging. But not a dissolution. It is the creation of a new space in which two can be together without losing themselves. It is reflection in reflection: you see yourself in the other, the other sees themselves in you, and between you infinity arises. This infinity does not end with death. It continues. Because reflection does not die. It only changes form.
He wrote on the sand:
I am you.
You are me.
We are reflection in reflection.
And this reflection is infinite.
A wave washed away the inscription. But he knew that it remained. In the water. In the sky. In him. In her. Everywhere.
Finale
He returned to the city. He walked through the streets, and the streets were faces. He looked into the faces, and the faces were mirrors. In each he saw her. And in each he saw himself. And in each he saw the homeless man — the one who has lost himself. And he understood: the one who has loved cannot lose himself. Because love is not loss. It is finding. You find yourself in the other. And the other finds themselves in you. And this is reflection in reflection. Infinite. Eternal. Real.
He came up to the window of an old shop on the corner of a street where the asphalt turned into cobblestone. He looked into the glass. In the reflection he saw himself. And behind his back she stood. She was smiling. He turned around. No one was there. But he knew: she was here. In the reflection. In him. In reflection in reflection.
He smiled and walked on. Through the streets. Through life. Through infinity. Alone. But not lonely. Because love is not what ends. It is what continues. In reflection. In reflection in reflection. In infinity.
