Yuri V. Slobodenyuk, known professionally as Yury Lobo (b. 1947), is an internationally exhibited Ukrainian-American visual artist, author, and cultural satirist based in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Artistic Style: Dubbed "Jack the Whipper" by critics for his high-velocity paint application—a deliberate kinetic counterpoint to Jackson Pollock’s drip technique—Lobo works across Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, Dadaist collage, Expressionist portraiture, and political caricature. His visual practice centers on stylistic versatility, saturated palettes, and sharp socio-political critique.

Literary Innovation: Lobo is the originator of the lilliputin genre (invented in 2005)—a concise, paradoxical aphorism characterized by dense linguistic layers, historical irony, and anachronistic humor. Each piece attributes hypothetical, razor-sharp statements to historical or cultural figures, exposing the hidden absurdities of their character and era.

Background & Journey: Born in Germany to a Soviet military family and raised across Russia and Ukraine, Lobo graduated from the Suvorov Military Cadet School before pivoting decisively to linguistics and the humanities at Kyiv National Linguistic University. After working in Moscow as an art museum docent, translator, television scriptwriter, and journalist, he escaped to the United States in 1991.

Media & Publications: Lobo established Florida’s first Russian-language Yellow Pages, founded an independent cultural magazine, and authored a volume of poetry, a play, and multiple collections of aphorisms in Russian and German. He was the focus of the 2016 documentary Catching Up with Pollock. His current projects include a new German-language collection of Liliputins dedicated to the Austrian satirist and aphorist Karl Kraus, alongside a groundbreaking, comprehensive monograph decoding the visual satire of Flemish master Pieter Bruegel the Elder.
