I Am the Start

I am the start
And a new count,
Through mistakes,
Through a distant flight.
I know the worth
Of word and deed,
My life — my own,
My body’s creed!

My nature’s tough,
That’s the result, it’s true:
Dad taught by deed,
Strict, on time, through and through.
Mom taught with words,
With care and grace,
Friends taught good manners,
Teamwork’s steady pace.

The world’s no fairy tale,
No honey sweet,
It’s a struggle, no fail,
A flight to reach the peak.
I won’t stand still,
I march ahead, alone,
With experience’s load,
Faith in my soul, I’m shown.

Step by step —
Through wind and dark,
I won’t break,
Won’t turn, won’t part.
No fear of the voice
That whispers: “Halt, retreat!”
I’m like a rock,
Forward, till dawn, complete.

And though the roads
Are long, they twist and wind,
Though thunder roars,
And winds are fierce, unkind,
I know for sure:
My course is to the rise,
The path is hard, it twists,
My word burns with rhyme’s surprise!

No years, no pain
Can bend me down, it’s clear,
I am steel,
Tempered for the fight, my dear.
Through every barrier,
Through dark and fog so dense,
I’ll forge ahead,
My new plan, my defense.

The world may change,
But I stand tall, I’m strong,
In step’s own range,
In verses, in a song.
My word is like
A flag in battle’s fray,
I live, I write,
I sing — I’m here to stay!

I’m not a stone,
Not a shadow by the wall,
I’m motion, on my own,
A pulse, the lights that call.
Wind in my heart,
Dawn in my eyes so bright,
My answer’s set apart —
To all the world, in light!
