Live with the Smoke!!!
Blue handle chipped where your thumb used to fit
I found your coat behind the bedroom door
Still smells like pine and the rain from before
I tell myself the leaving had a reason
But reasons dont make an empty house feel warm
So I drive this old road past the county line
With your last goodbye running through my mind
Every mile pulls hard, every turn cuts deep
I lose a little more of the promises we keep
If love is a fire, ours burned down slow
Now Im learning how to live with the smoke
The porch light flickers when the wind comes through
The dog still waits like he expects you
Your pictures face down on the dresser now
But I turn it over when I dont know how
I hear your name in the engines shaking
Like some old truth I never could outrun
So I drive this old road past the county line
With your last goodbye running through my mind
Every mile pulls hard, every turn cuts deep
I lose a little more of the promises we keep
If love is a fire, ours burned down slow
Now Im learning how to live with the smoke
Maybe someday Ill pass that house
And it wont feel like a wound
Maybe Ill thank you for the years
And mean it when I do
Tonight the wheel is all I have
And the dark is wide and long
I keep the radio turned down
So I can hear what went wrong
So I drive this old road past the county line
With your last goodbye running through my mind
Every mile pulls hard, every turn cuts deep
I lose a little more of the promises we keep
If love is a fire, ours burned down slow
Now Im learning how to live with the smoke
Yeah, Im learning how to let you go
Your coffee cup is still beside the sink
And Im finally brave enough to leave it there
