River Blues

The willow bends, the drowsy water sighs,
I'm hypnotized by eyes of frozen ice.

Moonlight carries off the grey stream's flow,
On this bank I sit, my wet feet numb below.
In the town not a living soul — just void all around,
God knows well, I'm getting used to my new ground.

My legs are soaked right through, no roads in sight,
I drift without a thought — chilled to the bone tonight.
I've fled so far away, there's nowhere left to hide,
At dawn I've quite forgotten how to breathe with pride.

A cloud fell from the sky like cotton white,
It lost its way between the river trails tonight.
I'll stay right here 'til sunrise, staring at the dark,
Turning this still moment into dreams that leave their mark.

I threw my watch straight down into the murky pool,
Let wind no longer drive my time beyond its rule.
From that wild look I finally came back to my senses,
I understood: I'm staying. No more running fences.

Let me be a stone on sandy riverbed,
Forgotten there forever in that watershed.
Alone for far too long, tired of playing games,
No reason left to run through ancient oakwood claims.

White shirt, the humid air is crystal clean,
You touch it — tender, soft as velveteen.
I've found a world unlike the rest, a quiet grace,
This night heals me completely with its empty space.

The city won't entice with hungry flames inside…
Bridges burned behind us. We don't wait and hide.
I'll linger long within the deafness of these nights,
To see the very thing that made me free of rights.

Just a stone I'll be upon the sandy floor…
And I'll sing out softly in the silence I adore.
It's been so long since I was truly hearing sound,
May your voice enchant and pull me from the ground.

Slowly… And it's cool… Like some old tale we've told…
Mmm mmm… Our story's cold.
