«The most nearly literal English I can find is:

Summer grasses:
the afterward of strong men’s dreams.

The original, however, conveys a strong sense of grief,
due at least in part to the martial roll of tsuwamono-domo
and the crack of the following ato. Basho, for all his gentleness
was a samurai by birth, and was living in an age when samurai
were no longer doing deeds of glory, I wish that some genius
could find the proper English for this haiku. I myself have not
been able to do so. After twenty-five years of trying, the best
I can do is:

Summer grass:
of stalwart warriors splendid dreams
the aftermath.»
