Sad angel

At velvet night, like amber glowing bright,
Embracing with its beams the sullen garden,
The lonely streetlamp cast its tender light,
While ashen darkness was gathering around.

It pierced the gloom and, shining through the night,
Protected this rebellious world below. And so do You still guard my weary life,
My mournful angel, pure as fallen snow.

You grieve because that reckless, wayward soul
Within my mortal body found its dwelling.
You gaze at me with bitterness untold — So many tears for me your eyes were shedding.

The lamp still burns; the wicked shadows flee.
Ungrateful is the world, yet still it brightens.
Shine on, my angel, maybe only this
Can keep me living in the world that frightens.
