Why Does the Sea Obey?
No such force exists, they say.
That is no secret, of course...
Then why does the sea obey?
Why does it rise with the tide?
Why do two bodies entwine?
Isn’t it lovely outside?
Look how the moon starts to shine.
If gravity isn’t a force,
Why do two bodies draw near?
Why do they follow one course,
Fearless, inevitable, clear?
Here is the truth, my dear:
Their paths are as straight as can be.
Everything seen from up here
Flies on its own, wild and free.
Galaxies, comets and stars
Circle so freely above.
And in those moments, afar,
Maybe they’re dreaming of love...
Bodies seem drawn to collide
Only when viewed from afar.
Seen from within, though, they glide —
Each one as free as a star!
Simply, their pathways one day
Happen to cross and combine.
Maybe that’s all we can say —
Neither one crossed any line.
One point in spacetime ahead
Seems to be drawing them near.
Nothing deceptive is said —
Nothing at all you should fear.
Still, you and I are drawn near.
Spacetime already must know
Where we’ll become one, my dear —
So let every last doubt go!
