Meditations At the Danube

The river does not care about the Empire. It moved before the first stone ever fell. It will move long after every name carved into marble turns to sediment. I write by oil lamp at the campaign's edge, the northern wind tearing at the tent. Not history — just notes to keep me honest, a man alone inside the general's chest.

You are not your office. You are not your victories. Strip everything away — what holds?

At the Danube, in the cold before the battle, I write to no one — only to the truth: the world is indifferent and enormous, and I am small, and that is not defeat.

Men sleep around me, dreaming of their homes. I dream of nothing — only open ground. The logos runs through everything alike: through stone, through flame, through me, through them, through now. To be disturbed by what cannot be changed is to declare war on the nature of things. I have made peace with the enemy of peace. That is the only battle worth the winning.

At the Danube, in the cold before the battle, I write to no one — only to the truth: the world is indifferent and enormous, and I am small, and that is not defeat.
