As the USA marks its 250th birthday, let’s take a moment to ask: was Britain’s “Mad King,” George III, really so nuts?

Read the following excerpts from his 1775 address to Parliament about America, juxtaposed with Trump’s comments about Iran, and answer TBR’s poll question: Who’s crazier?

George III: “The present situation of America, and my constant desire to have your advice, concurrence and assistance, on every important occasion, have determined me to call you thus early together.”

Trump: “I won’t use the word ‘war’ because they say, if you use the word war, that’s maybe not a good thing to do. They don’t like the word ‘war,’ because you’re supposed to get approval, so I’ll use the word ‘military operation,’ which is really what it is.”
___

George III: “I have ordered the proper estimates for the ensuing year to be laid before you; and I rely on your affection to me, and your resolution to maintain the just rights of this country, for such supplies as the present circumstances of our affairs require. Among the many unavoidable ill consequences of this rebellion, none affects me more sensibly than the extraordinary burthen which it must create to my faithful subjects.”

Trump: “I don’t think about Americans’ financial situation. I don’t think about anybody.”
___

George III: “I have also the satisfaction to inform you, that I have received the most friendly offers of foreign assistance; and if I shall make any treaties in consequence thereof, they shall be laid before you.”

Trump: “Because of the fact that we have had such Military Success, we no longer ‘need,’ or desire, the NATO Countries’ assistance — WE NEVER DID!”
___

George III: “[T]o be a subject of Great Britain, with all its consequences, is to be the freest member of any civil society in the known world.”

Trump: “The way the Corrupt and Failing New York Times is covering stories on a very battered and beat up Iran, through FAKE & MADE UP ‘FACTS’ is, in my opinion, ‘TREASONOUS.’ I will be adding all of their false and ridiculous reporting to my multi Billion Dollar lawsuit against them. They are Criminals!”
