Smoke
A cigarette before the battle’s hymn,
I taste the tar, a honeyed whim,
The world outside begins to swim.
The smoke unravels, slow and thin,
Like velvet ribbons on the skin,
The coming rapture tucked within
This fragile paper, silk and gin,
And everything I know is smoke.
Smoke unwinds through trembling fingers,
Soft as silk and slow as flame,
In the silence, pleasure lingers,
Breathing out a sacred name.
All around us, embers fall,
Smoke is all, smoke is all.
They grant a cigarette before the rope,
I draw the smoke in deep and low,
It weaves a fleeting, golden glow,
Then whispers let it gently flow.
The sky becomes a velvet show,
The ground is dizzy, sweet and slow,
I am the ash of afterglow,
The quiet hum of indigo,
And all I love is set aglow.
Smoke unwinds through trembling fingers,
Soft as silk and slow as flame,
In the silence, pleasure lingers,
Breathing out a sacred name.
All around us, embers fall,
Smoke is all, smoke is all.
