The Fortress Gates...
Unaware how fast the seasons pass. (Yeah)
Their little shadows dancing on the floor,
Before they learn what shadows are there for.
One day the heavy clock inside their chest
Will whisper secrets of the final rest.
They do not know their fragile, unmade clay
Is slowly, surely ticking toward decay.
Ahead of them, a winding, open road,
A beautiful and suffocating load (Yeah)
The highest peaks, the valleys of despair,
The poison waiting in the morning air.
I cannot save them from the breath of time,
I only have this melody,
I only have this melody,
This rhyme.
Behind the high, imposing family walls,
Where silence echoes through the private halls
I cannot see what happens in the dark,
Behind the iron gates, the boundary mark.
Are they protected, or are they confined?
What shapes the architecture of their mind?
Each castle keeps its secrets out of sight,
Beyond my reach, hidden from the light.
Ahead of them, a winding, open road,
A beautiful and suffocating load.
The highest peaks, the valleys of despair,
The poison waiting in the morning air.
I cannot save them from the breath of time,
I only have this melody,
I only have this melody,
This rhyme.
We build our fortresses to keep them safe,
But every child remains a lonely waif.
No parent's hand can hold the universe,
To stop the blessing or reverse the curse.
So play the music, let the verses weep,
While all the children are still fast asleep.
Before the grand awakening arrives,
Before the friction of their future lives.
I can only sing.
Just a fragile wing.
In the wind
