Farewell Old Shadow

I thought I saw a man I'd known
standing where the lamplight shone;
an amber glow, a quiet room
between the midnight and the dawn.

An old song wandered down the hall,
still playing long after it was gone;
and all the weight I'd carried here
grew strangely light and travelled on.

A thread of smoke hung in the air.
The door stood open to the night.
Something lingered near the stairs,
just beyond the edge of sight.

The silence settled in the rooms
of houses left to time and rain.
The wind moved softly through
the halls, repeating what it could not name.

And emptiness stepped from the dark
and stood beneath the fading light,
reciting lines from years before
to no one listening that night.

The mirrors held no memory.
The walls had nothing left to keep.
Only the shape of vanished days
still resting somewhere in their sleep.

The mirrors would not speak again.
The walls forgot my name at last.
Fear left the room before I did,
and drifted with the fading past.

Only the dust within the corners.
Only the house at rest remained.
Only the echo of a life returned
through silence once again.

And so farewell, old shadow mine.
Leave these ruined rooms behind.
The years fall shut like closing doors,
and fade into the night.

Beyond the gate of faded days
something drifts into the haze.
What once was mine has lost its name.
And now I am free again.

Beyond the line where memory fails,
where neither wound nor sorrow stays,
light pours softly through the void,
beyond the reach of days.

And all things vanish without voice.
And all things vanish without name.
The house grows still. The night grows deep.
And nothing will remain the same.
