My translation of Eduard Asadov's poem "Стихи о рыжей дворняге".

Poems About a Red Cur

The master caressed with his fingers
The shaggy red back, being kind:
"Farewell, bro! The pain really lingers,
Though I have to leave you behind."

His collar, he threw at the station
And then disappeared somewhere
Where crowds without hesitation
Were pouring in carriages there.

The dog didn't make any sound
No howling, no whining, no madness
Two brown eyes kept watching around
And following his back with sadness.

An old man who stood at the entry
Said: "Well? Left behind, poor sir?
If you were a dog of the gentry...
But you are, by nature, a cur!"

Flames burst from the smokestack and wound
The engine roared loud with all power,
The train like a bull stamped the ground
And rushed into night and the shower.

In carriages warm, guys were joking
As if no mishaps could occur,
They napped there, laughing and smoking
No one here remembered the cur.

The master knew nothing: out there,
On sleepers, exhausted and shaking
Behind the red signal’s glare,
The dog his last effort was making.

Once stumbling,  then leapt up again,
Paws bleeding on stones as he tried
His heart seemed to burst through the pain,
From his mouth that was open wide!

The master knew nothing that power
Had suddenly left the dog's body,
And hitting the rail in that hour,
He fell down the bridge, broken, bloody…

To snags, waves washed the ball of fur...
Oh dude! You don’t know that for sure:
The body can be of a cur
But heart can be noble and pure!
