Boy of maybe six years old.
“Look, oh look, before your eyes -
Ding-dong, copper coin I hold!”
“Where did you get that, son?
And why are you shaking so?
God, barefooted you have run,
Barefoot running through the snow!”
“A rich boy gave it to me…
We were running in the snow:
I was barefoot, whereas he
He had his shoes on, as you know.
‘Catch me, then the coin is yours!’
— So he said and ran away.
I… I chased him… Ma… of course…”
“Son, oh son, what do you say?”
Blue as lilac grew the lad,
Teeth were clenched, his body froze.
From his small hand coin, he had
dropped to earth — his eyes then closed.
A week later, Sunday came,
Mother weeps — her child is gone!
Scythe cut down the flower's stem,
The poor herb withered alone.
In his coffin, Ivan sleeps,
He wants nothing, quiet and grim
Copper coin in hand, he keeps,
which the rich boy gave to him.
