The Hospital Ward (Memory Frame)

My mother was divorced; he never found the nerve to do it—
Two kids, a nagging wife.
They met for many years, on borrowed time and zero rights.
He was a pushover. Everyone walked all over him.
But I loved him. In place of a father.

My father used to say, "Don't turn her into a whore."
The last time I saw him was in the cancer ward.
Sweatpants sagging at his knees, loose, flabby skin.
Trembling hands. Ice cream on a saucer.
A pile of blister packs on the nightstand.
The smell of porridge, bleach, and utter hopelessness.
It felt baked right into the walls and the people.
A dim, otherworldly light.
Frail old women by the TV in the lounge.
The television was turned off.

Then a frame from memory—the coffin rolling down the conveyor belt at the crematorium.
His heavy-set wife in a black headscarf. Only the youngest son was there—
the eldest had been beaten to death in a fight.
I miss him. Even after all these years.
So does my mother. She never married again.
Her only joy is in the grandkids.
