People are leaving

At twenty, we love like crazy, burning bridges down,
At twenty-five, we build a family on an emotional high.
At thirty, we hold on for the kids, the rush of the town...
Just hoping that the warmth we lost will return by and by.
But then by forty, you realize your life is split in two,
Half the journey's covered up by tracks you can't retrace.
And quiet blame now walks the halls and echoes through and through,
Just the cold and endless night between us in this place.

People leave, people leave...
People leave from the emptiness and silent space.
To find a place where frozen days can finally melt away,
Where they'll be held without a lie, without a false embrace.
A break past forty isn't betrayal, it's not a sin,
It's a desperate attempt to save the years you have within.
To start it all again and see the dawning of the light,
And take a drink of freedom that is real and pure and bright.

Now sorrow has moved into this house, it's settled in to stay,
Where the only sounds are bitter thoughts we never get to say.
When there's no respect, when water has turned into ice,
We're two together, but inside, we're lonely and pay the price.
A person starts to ask themselves, a final, parting plea:
"Is this really how I want to live what's left of me,
To serve the final seconds of this exile, endlessly?"

Beyond the door, there might be smoke, another hazy view,
But at least a ray of hope will finally break through.
To feel you're wanted and alive, to feel the sun again,
Not smoldering in these clothes of gray, this cold and heavy chain.
Remember this one simple truth, a lesson hard and learned,
While your heart still beats and stubborn thoughts have not been overturned.
To save the rest of your own life, before it is too late,
Is a worthy end to a long drama sealed by fate.

To start again...
To try once more...
